From cage fighter to truck driver

June 13, 2016

He was a cage fighter they told me.

I'm not sure if that statement was meant to scare me or impress me.  You see, I've had the opportunity to train in the same space as MMA fighters. Fighters from the UFC, like Clay "The Carpenter" Guida, former Bellator featherweight champ Pat "Paddy Mike" Curran and even fighters from our local XFO MMA here in Illinois. So it definitely didn't scare me.  It gave me an instant idea of the type of guy I was going to meet.  A hard working, dedicated, never give up kind of guy.

If you haven't met any MMA fighters in your lifetime, let me tell ya, most look scarier than what they really are.  The majority I've come into contact with are covered in tattoos and can look pretty intimidating. Generally, they prove to be pretty big teddy bears once you finally muster enough courage to talk with them. Friendly and outgoing, willing to help you learn the ropes and possibly new moves, but when they step into the octagon .... that's when the bear will rip your face off!

You don't train that hard and let someone stop you. You don't dedicate yourself to training like that and not have it seep into other parts of your life. So while getting into a cage may not be for everyone, it makes sense for a few and you never underestimate the guy it makes sense to. That's the one that may be down sometimes, but never out!

So when I met Robert, it fit.

I had already read an article about him in National Trucking Magazine that confirmed my original thoughts. I then then had the opportunity to meet him in person. Yep, outgoing and friendly with a don't F with me air about him and laser focused with a goal. A man that prides himself on being able to provide for his family, doing whatever it takes. There will be no tapping
